Ocean talents

Ocean is the naval archetype, and it lives entirely at sea. The talents only fire while you're aboard a boat. They scale your ship, not your character - cannons, hull, repairs, speed, and your crew.

You earn Ocean points by sinking ships (see Naval Combat). Spend them from the Ocean section of the talent panel, split into four columns: Broadside (offensive), Bulwark of the Deep (defensive), Navigation (utility), and Fishing.

Every Ocean bonus folds into the same ship-stat math your crew and upgrade deeds feed, so it stacks cleanly with a good crew and good upgrade rolls.

Broadside (offensive)

Tier Talent Max ranks Cost Effect
T1 Heavy Shot 5 1 pt Your cannons hit for +6% hull damage per rank (max +30%).
T2 Rapid Reload 3 1 pt Cannons reload 7% faster per rank (max ~21%) - more broadsides per fight.
T3 Long Guns 1 2 pt +30% cannon range - shell a hull before it can answer.
T4A Full Sail 1 2 pt +25% ship speed. Run a target down or slip a losing fight.
T4B Powder Charges 1 2 pt +20% cannon hull damage. (Fork - choose Full Sail or Powder Charges.)
T5 Broadside Barrage (active) 1 3 pt Capstone ability - [broadsidebarrage. Target a tile and unleash a rapid 4-shot burst out the side that bears on it (the side with cannons - never both beams). Ignores the cannon reload cooldown - fire it even with the guns mid-reload; gated only by its own 120s cooldown. Place it on your talent hotbar.

Bulwark of the Deep (defensive)

Tier Talent Max ranks Cost Effect
T1 Reinforced Hull 5 1 pt +6% boat hull HP per rank (max +30%).
T2 Master Carpenter 3 1 pt Hull repairs (kits, repair rate, the Carpenter's passive mending) restore +12% more per rank.
T3 Ghost Sails 1 2 pt Enemy spyglasses spot your ship from 5 fewer tiles - close in, or vanish, before they see your sails.
T4A Emergency Repair (active) 1 2 pt Ability - [emergencyrepair. Instantly patches +25% of your ship's max hull in one shot. 60s cooldown. (Fork - choose Emergency Repair or Iron Plating.)
T4B Iron Plating 1 2 pt +18% boat hull HP. (Fork - choose Emergency Repair or Iron Plating.)
T5 Brace for Impact (active) 1 3 pt Capstone ability - [braceforimpact. Opens a 15-second window that sharply cuts incoming hull damage and patches your whole crew to full HP. 120s cooldown.
Tier Talent Max ranks Cost Effect
T1 Dead Reckoning 5 1 pt Unlocks the autopilot: right-click the world map and choose Plot a course and your helmsman sails there on his own. The ship cruises at 75% of normal speed at rank 1, +5% per rank (95% at rank 5).
T2 Crow's Nest 3 1 pt Your own spyglass sees +10% farther per rank, and with any rank invested every ship within your spyglass reach is painted onto your world map: blue blips for player hulls, red for hostile ones. The sweep refreshes every few seconds while you are on deck at sea.

How the autopilot works

With at least one rank of Dead Reckoning, open the world map and right-click any spot at sea:

  • Sail here - plots a fresh course to that point and sets sail.
  • Add waypoint - queues another leg onto the current course (up to 16), so you can route around islands by hand.
  • Stop the ship - halts the hull and clears the course.

Your course is drawn on the world map while you are aboard: a dotted gold line runs from your ship through every remaining waypoint, each waypoint gets a gold ring, and the final destination wears a bold bright ring. The plot updates as waypoints are reached and disappears when the course ends or you leave the ship.

Three ways to give the orders, pick your favorite:

  • Right-click the world map - the Plot a course menu above.
  • Hotkeys - Options (Ctrl+O), Macros: bind SailToDestination, SailAddWaypoint, and SailClearWaypoints to any keys. The first two bring up the classic targeting cursor and open the world map: click open water in the game world or click the world map, and the helmsman takes it from there. Add Waypoint stays armed after every accepted click, so you can lay out a whole route without pressing the hotkey again. Keep clicking the game world or the map until the route is ready. Escape cancels the cursor, Sail To switches back to a one-shot destination, and Clear stops the ship outright.
  • The Helm pad - the [helm panel has a WAYPOINT button that brings up the same targeting cursor and stays armed for repeated clicks - lay the whole course from the wheel. (STOP halts the ship and clears the course; the pad's FISHING toggle lives beside it.)

The raw chat commands are still there too: [sailto x y and [sailwp x y plot directly, [sailto / [sailwp with no coordinates bring up the targeting cursor, and [sailstop clears the course. A bare [sailwp uses the same repeat-until-cancel waypoint cursor.

Some seamanship still applies:

  • The helmsman steers a straight bearing to each waypoint - he does not route around land. If anything blocks the way (an island, another hull), he stops dead and calls it out. Drop waypoints around obstacles.
  • Your ranks are checked while you sail. Refund Dead Reckoning mid-course and within a few seconds the helmsman stops and the course clears. Change your rank and the cruise speed re-scales to match. Slows (chain shot, flooding) and speed buffs also apply to an autopilot cruise the moment they land, same as manual sailing.
  • Any manual steering order disengages the autopilot - grabbing the wheel always wins. So does dropping anchor or saying stop.
  • You must be on deck and authorized to drive the ship to plot a course, and the anchor must be up.
  • All the usual speed math still applies on top of the autopilot's cruise factor: hull rolls, upgrades, crew, speed buffs, and slows.

Fishing

Tier Talent Max ranks Cost Effect
T1 Baited Hooks 5 1 pt Deep-sea casts are +6% per rank more likely to bring up something special: bottles, big fish, wreck debris.
T2 Chum the Waters (active) 1 2 pt Ability - [chumthewaters. Tip a bucket of chum over the rail: for 60 seconds your special-catch chances at sea are doubled. 180s cooldown.
T3 Old Salt's Eye 3 1 pt +8% chance per rank that a bottle you catch rolls one level higher than it would have.

The whole column feeds the deep-sea fishing loop: shore fishing trains the skill, boat fishing catches the treasure, and these talents tilt the odds. Like every Ocean talent they only work at sea.

Active abilities

Four Ocean talents are abilities you fire, not passives. They sit on your talent hotbar like any other active. The three combat abilities only work while you're the captain at the helm; anyone aboard may chum.

  • Broadside Barrage ([broadsidebarrage, T5 Broadside) - target a tile, fire a rapid 4-shot burst out the single side that bears on it. Ignores the cannon reload cooldown (fire it even while the guns are reloading). 120s cooldown.
  • Emergency Repair ([emergencyrepair, T4A Bulwark) - instant +25% max-hull patch. 60s cooldown.
  • Brace for Impact ([braceforimpact, T5 Bulwark) - 15s incoming-hull-damage cut + full crew heal. 120s cooldown.
  • Chum the Waters ([chumthewaters, T2 Fishing) - 60s of doubled special-catch chances. 180s cooldown. Works for any crew member at sea.

Everything else in the tree - Heavy Shot, Rapid Reload, Long Guns, Full Sail, Powder Charges, Reinforced Hull, Master Carpenter, Ghost Sails, Iron Plating, Dead Reckoning, Crow's Nest, Baited Hooks, Old Salt's Eye - stays passive. Those bonuses are always on while you're aboard (Dead Reckoning's course plotting lives on the world map's right-click menu rather than the hotbar, and Crow's Nest paints its ship blips straight onto the world map).

At sea only

Ocean talents apply while you're aboard a ship. Step onto land - or go overboard - and the bonuses switch off until you're back at the helm. The three abilities also require you to be the ship's captain: the one authorized to drive it.
