Rare cloth and restyling

Most clothing in the realm is the colour it was made. Rare cloth is how you change that: a stackable, tradeable resource that carries a colour, and a cheap tailor-made kit that spends it to restyle a garment you already own.

No skill is involved. No profession level is involved. Anyone can restyle anything they can carry. What a colour costs you is the cloth, and cloth is something you find, trade for, or buy.

The short version

  1. Get a stack of rare cloth in a colour you want.
  2. Open the craft menu, choose Tailoring, and press ALTER CLOTHING.
  3. Pick the garment, then pick the cloth.
  4. A card shows the colour and the exact cost. Confirm, and the garment takes it.

Cutting a garment with scissors works the other way: a garment wearing a rare colour cuts back into rare cloth of that colour.

What it costs

A garment costs the same amount of rare cloth to restyle as it takes cloth to sew in the first place. If you know the tailoring recipe, you know the price.

Garment Rare cloth
Skull cap 2
Bandana, body sash, half apron 6
Doublet, shirt, tunic, surcoat 8
Short pants, long pants, kilt, skirt 8
Floppy hat, wide brim hat, feathered hat 11
Cloak, full apron 14
Plain dress, fancy dress, robe 16
Jester suit 24

Leather footwear costs its own leather count, so sandals are cheaper than thigh boots. The kit tells you the exact price the moment you pick the garment, before you commit any cloth.

What cutting returns

This is the part worth understanding before you commit a colour.

What you cut What you get back
A rare-coloured garment you found, never restyled The full cloth cost
A garment you restyled yourself Half the cloth cost

So a coloured hat that drops in the world is worth its full weight in cloth: cut it up and spend that colour on something you would rather wear. But once you commit a colour to a garment, half of it is gone for good if you change your mind. Restyling is meant to be a decision, not a dressing room.

Store colours are permanent. A colour bought from the Store cannot be cut back out of a garment at all, so it can never be moved to another piece. The confirmation card warns you before you commit one.

Practical consequence: if you own a rare-coloured piece you are not attached to, cut it before you restyle it. You keep every thread that way.

Restyling

ALTER CLOTHING sits in the craft menu whenever Tailoring is selected. It needs no tool, no station, no skill and no materials beyond the cloth itself. Anyone can use it.

Before anything is spent you get a confirmation card showing the colour on screen, what the garment costs, how much cloth you hold, and what you will have left. Nothing is consumed until you press RESTYLE.

The garment and the cloth both have to be in your backpack.

What can be restyled

Anything you wear that is cloth or leather clothing: hats, shirts, doublets, tunics, dresses, robes, cloaks, pants, skirts, kilts, sashes, aprons, and footwear.

What cannot:

  • Armour, weapons and shields. A fight has to stay readable at a glance.
  • Artifacts. They keep the colour they were made with.
  • Quest items.

The garment and the cloth both have to be in your backpack. You cannot restyle something you are wearing: take it off first.

Storing your colours

A stack of cloth only merges with cloth of the exact same colour, so a wardrobe of colours is a wardrobe of stacks. The Adventurer's Coffer has a Rare Cloth shelf that banks them account-wide, one row per colour with a swatch of the real hue. Like the Resonance, Mastery, Materials and Gems shelves, it is a permanent one-time unlock.

Colours

Rare colours are grouped into families. A stack of cloth only merges with cloth of the exact same colour, so a wardrobe of colours is a wardrobe of stacks.

Family Character
Dark Deep, low tones: Obsidian, Nightbloom, Oxblood
Metallic Worked metal: Old Bronze, Bright Steel
Ocean Deep water: Lagoon, Abyssal, Kraken
Wilderness Weather and wood: Driftwood, Stormfront

A colour that is retired stops being obtainable, but every stack and every garment already wearing it keeps working forever. Nothing you own goes stale.

Where cloth comes from

Rare cloth is not yet obtainable in play. The colour families above are built and the restyle loop is live, but the drop tables that seed them and the Store shelf that sells the Shimmer family are both still to come. Watch the changelog.

When they arrive, colours will come from two separate pools that never mix: colours you earn from the world, and colours you buy. Neither will ever appear in the other, so nothing you earn can simply be bought, and nothing you buy gets handed out later.
