The Hostel

A safe place to stash a bed and your belongings without owning a house. The Hostel is a protected hall where you rent a bed by the week, each one with three storage chests you can customise. There are no guards - instead the whole hall is a strict safe zone: no one can attack you, steal from you, snoop your packs, drop loot on the floor, or fling fields and explosion potions inside, and only you can open your own chests. The rentable area is larger now, with more beds to go around.

Restart-safe, not wipe-proof. Your room, your customisation, and your rent clock survive server restarts. The contents of your chests are real items, so like everything else they don't survive a full world wipe - treat hostel storage as convenient, not permanent.

How to rent a room

Find a hostelkeeper - they stand near town banks. Double-click one, or say hostel, room, bed, or rent nearby, and the rent/customise panel opens.

  • Not a renter yet? The panel lets you pick your bed, your chests, and your chest colour, shows the weekly price, and confirms.
  • Already renting? You can re-customise, head to your room, or give it up. Renters also get a Go to My Room shortcut on the keeper's left-click menu that walks you straight in - it won't fire while a fight is still trailing you.

Confirm, and the first week's rent comes out of your bank and your room is furnished on the spot. One room per account.

Inside the Hostel

The whole Hostel is a strict safe zone - no guards, but nothing hostile can happen here:

  • No attacking. You can't be attacked and you can't attack anyone inside. A true safe area.
  • No stealing or snooping - your packs and your chests are off-limits to everyone but you.
  • No item drops on the floor - anything you try to drop on the ground is handed back to your pack.
  • No wall or field spells, and no explosion (purple) potions - area denial and thrown explosives simply won't go off in the hall.
  • No combat retreat - you can't be sent into the Hostel while a fight is still following you (recently attacked, recently attacked someone, or flagged criminal). Shake the fight first.
  • You can recall out freely, but you can't recall, gate, or mark a rune into it. The keeper is the way in - the travel-lock keeps the hall sealed both ways.

To leave, step onto the exit gate in the hall. It drops you at a fixed world spot just outside. One catch for murderers: a red (a flagged murderer) who takes the exit gate doesn't land at the normal spot - they're exiled to Thornreach, a lawless region, instead. A clean-handed renter always lands at the standard exit.

Customising your room

The rent panel gives you four choices:

  • Bed - several styles, previewed live, including a novelty Coffin. It sits centred in your room with your chests at its feet.
  • Chests - the style of your three storage chests, lined up at the foot of the bed.
  • Chest colour - a palette applied to those chests. The colour picker sits right under the chest gallery so you can see exactly what it recolours.
  • Rug colour - every room comes carpeted. A wall-to-wall carpet covers your whole section (under the bed and chests) and rides along in the base rent in its natural colour. Pick a colour for it and you'll pay a little extra per week. Rug colour is separate from chest colour, so mix and match freely - and it's a real floor you can walk on.

Fancier beds, chests, and colours push up your weekly rent. The panel always shows the running weekly total and your bank balance before you commit. Changing your choices later only affects future weeks; it never refunds the current one. Only you (and staff) can open your chests.

Rent, grace, and eviction

Rent is pulled automatically from your bank every week.

  • If your bank can't cover a week, you get one week of grace and a warning. During grace your chests go read-only - you can take things out, but not put valuables in.
  • Still can't pay by the end of grace? You're evicted, and your chests' contents are swept safely into your bank. Nothing is ever destroyed or dropped on the ground.
  • If your bank is too full to hold everything, the overflow is held for you - run [claimroom to pull it back once you've made space.

You can give up a room voluntarily at any time, and your belongings are swept to your bank the same way. Open the keeper's panel as a renter and use Give Up Room to cancel. Because this empties your chests, the button asks you to confirm: your first click arms it (it changes to a CONFIRM prompt), and only a second click actually releases the room. Your chests are emptied into your bank and the room frees up for someone else.
